Some mixed martial artists have publicly admitted that they take anabolic steroids as a part of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) which has been recommended by doctors. The executive director of the Nevada State Athletic commission (NSAC) Keith Kizer confirms that this factor has created an impression among numerous individuals that steroid exemptions are given to permit MMA fighters to use the steroid testosterone.
During an interview with Ben Fowlkes of MMA Fighting Keith Kizer said that some people thought that any fighter could receive exemptions for usage of testosterone. He noted that he couldn’t say it about other states but he mentioned about the situation in Nevada. According to the executive director of the NSAC, it is 50/50 whether a request for steroid exemption will be approved.
TRT is a therapy that is required for adult males that suffer from hypogonadism (reduced testosterone levels). If sportspersons correspond to the medical criteria, they may be allowed to take steroids.
The NSAC has strict requirements for fighter who desire to get a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for intake of steroids. An athlete must show the document which manifests that blood levels of testosterone are low. But if an athlete has low level of testosterone, it is not enough to get a TUE. Treating physicians should identify reasons and medical conditions. The details connected with testosterone replacement therapy should be identified by health care providers as well. Each detail must display that certain athlete has to administrate testosterone for therapeutic purposes and administration of steroids will not give unfair advantage to the fighter.
Several top athletes of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) have administrated steroids for TRT. Chael Sonnen, Nate Marquardt, Dennis Hallman and Dan Henderson belong to the starts of the UFC that take steroids for medical needs.
Keith Kizer, the executive director of the NSAC proclaims that ban of steroids makes MMA safer. He notes that if a fighter takes steroids, he/she takes unfair advantage as if it is used knuckles that are hidden inside gloves. So, this is not only cheating. This factor is linked with dangers for life. If you say to a fighter that you can put knuckles in the gloves so, as no one will observe it, this person will ask you not to bother him. But it is strangely that such athlete administrates steroids.
Undoubtedly, administration of steroids has potential dangers to increase the harm which may occur in MMA.
