When it is announced that the Pittsburgh Steelers intend to play, sportswriters seem to be responsible to write about their links with steroids. They try to create a steroid scandal and to find any probable links of this team with it.
Mike Fish of ESPN showed the same attitude, when this football team played in the 2009 Super Bowl. This reporter turned to be successful in writing news connected with this team and steroids.
However reporters do not have always success, when it comes to allegations of a team or an athlete with performance-enhancing drugs before a competition, the situation is changed, if it is spoken about the Steelers. Reporters prefer writing about their history, about the lesson linked with anabolic steroids which took place in 1970s.
David Fleming wrote about historical lessons of this team before a game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers. This sportswriter noted about time, when the NFL hadn’t yet prohibited administration of steroids. Thus, according to certain sources, players of the Pittsburgh Steelers administrated steroids in the late 1970s. It is mentioned in the 1991 book “False Glory: The Steve Courson Story” that more than 70 % of the offensive linemen of the Steelers administrated steroids.
It must have been true but you should understand that application of steroids wasn’t prohibited. Why are the Pittsburgh Steelers blamed, if application of steroids was permitted?
Jim Haslett told the New Orleans Saints that the Pittsburgh Steelers had won numerous times in 1970s and in 1980s due to steroids. According to this coach, the football players of the team became much stronger due to intake of steroids.
But it is important to be careful here. The Steelers were not the first football team that applied steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. There were other teams in professional football that applied steroids even in well-organized manner.
Matt Chaneygave the better explanation related to steroid use by football players. He noted in his book “The Spiral of Denial: Muscle Doping in American football” that the Pittsburgh Steelers were not responsible for the steroid revolution in football. There was another team that had to be condemned for this aspect. The San Diego Charges took steroids before the Steelers in 1960s.
Although the Pittsburgh Steelers applied steroids in 1970s, it is impossible to claim that they won due to steroids. There were also players of other teams that applied these preparations as well. Nonetheless, the Pittsburgh Steelers were successful!
